Real Madrid’s invisible bench, numbers don’t lie

Among the 20 teams in Spain’s La Liga, Real Madrid made the fewest substitutions, with the capital team at the bottom in terms of both number and duration.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has drawn attention as the coach who has used the bench the least in La Liga matches so far.

The Italian coach gave the substitutes a total of 888 minutes of playing time, and those who entered the game contributed 3 goals and 5 assists during this time.

While one-third of La Liga has been completed, it was striking that Real Madrid was the team that used its substitutes’ bench the least.

18.5 MINUTES PER SUBSTITUTE PLAYER

The substitutes played just 888 minutes in 12 matches, with 48 players sharing that time. This equates to 18.5 minutes per player.

The last match against Osasuna was the match that ruined Real Madrid’s bench statistics. Early changes were made due to injuries. Coming off the bench, Brahim played 70 minutes, Asencio 60 minutes, Modric 45 minutes, Arda Guler and Endrick 15 minutes each. A total of 205 minutes. If this last match was not included, Real Madrid’s bench statistics would have been even lower.

In the Osasuna match, Arda Guler and Endick entered the game in the 75th minute. However, Davide Ancelotti had warned his father to make a change in the 69th minute. However, the Italian coach preferred to bring these two players into the game as late as possible.

ANCELOTTI WAITING FOR 80 MINUTES IN THE LEAGUE

Real Madrid have only made 5 changes in 3 of their 12 matches. 15 of the changes were made after the 80th minute. There were 8 changes in the first 60 minutes, and half of them were due to injuries.

Looking at the average, Ancelotti makes his first change in the 72nd minute and waits for the last quarter.

When we look at La Liga in general, we see that Atletico Madrid is at the top with 1615 minutes spent on the substitutes in 13 matches and making 63 changes. They are followed by Celta Vigo, Athletic Bilbao and Valladolid. Although the leader Barcelona is at the bottom of the list, they use the substitutes’ bench much more than Real Madrid. Barcelona spent 1182 minutes on the substitutes in 13 matches and made 59 changes.

MODRIC ENTERED THE MOST FROM THE RESERVE

The Italian’s most frequent substitutes were Modric, Rodrygo and Brahim. Modric came on as a substitute and played 174 minutes, making 1 assist. Rodrygo came on as a substitute 4 times and played 157 minutes, but could not contribute to the score. Brahim played 131 minutes. The Moroccan-born player is the most useful substitute with 2 goals and 1 assist.

Ancelotti gave 15 substitutes a chance during the match, but apart from Rodrygo, Brahim and Modric, none of them reached 100 minutes.

On the other hand, the statistics are made without taking into account extra time. If extra time was included, for example, Endrick, who played 55 minutes, actually played 121 minutes. Endrick is the second player to have entered the game off the bench the most, after Bilbao’s Unai Gomez, with 8.

There are only three players in Real Madrid who have entered the game and scored: Brahim, Endrick and Vinicius. The players who entered the game and provided assists are Modric, Brahim, Asencio and Vinicius. Arda Guler entered the game 5 times in La Liga and played 64 minutes. He could not score or assist.

A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STRATEGY IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

On the other hand, Ancelotti is implementing a different strategy in the Champions League. He has made 18 substitutions in the 4 Champions League matches they have played so far. Only 3 of them were made after the 80th minute. The substitutes played 414 minutes in the Champions League. This is almost half of the league.

Ancelotti has only used the same starting 11 once in a row. He kept the same team that won the European Super Cup against Atalanta in the first round of La Liga against Mallorca. He started each of the next 15 games with a different starting 11.
