Sarah Storey Claims 38th World Title, Defeats Heidi Gaugain at Para-Cycling World Championships
Sarah Storey continued her reign as a para-cycling legend, defeating long-time rival Heidi Gaugain to secure gold in the women’s C4-C5 individual time trial at the 2024 Para-cycling Road World Championships in Switzerland. The 46-year-old completed the 29.9km course in an impressive 45 minutes 25 seconds, finishing one minute and 36 seconds ahead of France’s Gaugain.
This victory marks Storey’s 38th Para world title and a successful defense of the crown she earned last year in Glasgow. Reflecting on her performance, Storey expressed her satisfaction with her effort: “To hit out the way I did, I was really chuffed. The course was so much fun. It was great, and I was really glad I had the legs to put in the performance as well,” she told BBC Sport.
More Success for Ireland and Britain
In the women’s B individual time trial, Ireland’s Katie-George Dunlevy and her pilot Linda Kelly claimed victory with a time of 43:14. It was a strong showing for the British riders, as Sophie Unwin and her pilot Jenny Holl secured second place, while Lora Fachie and her pilot Corrine Hall completed the podium in third.
Storey’s latest triumph further cements her status as one of the greatest athletes in para-cycling history, with her enduring dominance on display once again. The race against Gaugain was highly anticipated, and Storey’s ability to deliver another world-class performance adds to her remarkable legacy.
