Thomas Tuchel Reveals He Could Quit England Job if 2026 World Cup is Deemed ‘a Failure’

Thomas Tuchel, the recently hired manager of England, has acknowledged that his job may not last if the 2026 World Cup is deemed a disaster. With an 18-month contract in place, the German coach has high standards for his tenure with the Three Lions.

Following England’s defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Gareth Southgate resigned, and the Football Association started looking for a new manager. Tuchel agreed to become the manager of England earlier this week. His tenure will begin on January 1, 2025, and he will be leading the squad to the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

What Tuchel Said

When asked if the 2026 World Cup was a “win or bust” situation, Tuchel responded candidly:

“I don’t know, it depends. I know what you’re saying, no, it’s not a gamble, but we speak it out now very clearly why we are here and what we want to achieve. We are not shy of it.”

Tuchel emphasized that the team’s objectives are clear and openly discussed:

“We are absolutely open about it. It does not help the more often we speak about it, but it should be out there. Then we can set the standards, values, and principles, because then we have to live up to them for 18 months.”
