Vincent Poirier Reflects on Leaving Real Madrid for Anadolu Efes

Vincent Poirier has embarked on a new chapter of his basketball career, leaving Real Madrid after three successful seasons to join Anadolu Efes Istanbul. The French center, who was known for his dominant frontcourt partnership with Edy Tavares, sought new challenges, more playing time, and a greater role within the team.

Poirier described his decision to move on from Real Madrid, one of the most prestigious clubs in European basketball, to Anadolu Efes as a pivotal career move.

“I left Madrid because I wanted a new challenge, and Efes can give me more minutes and more importance. It’s going to be different from Madrid, and I love it here.” he told MARCA. Although Madrid offered many reasons to stay, Poirier felt the need for a fresh start, adding. “Madrid is the best club in the world, both on and off the court… but this was an important decision for my future and my career.”

Memories of Triumph and Resilience at Real Madrid

During his time with Real Madrid, Poirier was part of many memorable moments, including their incredible comeback in the 2023 EuroLeague playoffs. The team rallied from a 0-2 deficit against Partizan to win the series 3-2, ultimately capturing the EuroLeague title in Kaunas. Reflecting on Real Madrid’s remarkable resilience, Poirier joked, “It’s the shirt. It always seems to happen like that in football and basketball… It’s like Red Bull—it gives you wings.”

Poirier attributed the club’s winning mentality to its veteran players, whose experience and talent instill a culture of belief and perseverance throughout the squad. “I think it’s the veterans who bring that mindset… which then spreads to the rest of the team.”

Aiming to Lead and Win with Anadolu Efes

Now at Anadolu Efes, Poirier is eager to apply the lessons he learned at Real Madrid to help guide his new team back to the Final Four. He aims to bring the same winning mentality and leadership qualities gained from playing alongside experienced teammates like Tavares, Sergio Llull, Rudy Fernandez, and Sergio “Chacho” Rodriguez.

“With everything I’ve learned… I want to bring that to Efes and help the team return to the Final Four and beyond.”
