Why Isn’t Manchester United Sacking Erik Ten Hag?

Despite a poor performance, Manchester United, Fenerbahce’s opponent in the UEFA Europa League, has decided to continue with coach Erik Ten Hag. The reason behind this decision has become clear.

Manchester United finished 8th in the Premier League last season and has also started this season with disappointments. The Red Devils have only secured 2 wins in the first 6 weeks, placing them 13th in the league with 7 points. This situation has raised questions about Ten Hag’s future, but the club management has decided to stick with the Dutch coach.

A Necessity, Not a Decision

However, it turns out that this decision to continue is more of a necessity. According to the English sports if Manchester United were to dismiss Erik Ten Hag, they would have to pay the 54-year-old coach a compensation fee of 17.5 million euros.

Contract Extended Last Season

There were claims that Erik Ten Hag could be sacked this season due to poor results. However, after winning the FA Cup by defeating Manchester City 2-1 at the end of the season, his contract was extended by another year.

Contract Extension Increased Compensation

If Manchester United’s management had terminated Ten Hag’s contract last summer, they would have had to pay a compensation fee of 10 million euros.

214.50 Million Euros Spent on Transfers

The Manchester United management, which renewed the contract with the Dutch coach, spent 214.50 million euros on transfers this summer to address squad deficiencies. Since Ten Hag took over on July 1, 2022, the total transfer spending by the club management has reached 660.08 million euros.

123 Matches in Charge of Manchester United

Erik Ten Hag, whose future is a topic of discussion, has managed Manchester United in a total of 123 matches so far. The experienced coach has achieved an average of 1.87 points per match in these games. He has also celebrated winning the English League Cup in the 2022/2023 season and the FA Cup in the 2023/2024 season.

Critical Matches Against Porto and Fenerbahce

In the first week of the UEFA Europa League, Manchester United drew 1-1 at home against Twente. In the second week, they will face Portuguese team Porto. The match will take place on October 3 at 22:00.

United will then visit Fenerbahce in Istanbul on October 24
