Red Card Debate: Should Brighton’s Joao Pedro Have Been Sent Off?

VAR said Joao Pedro's action did not warrant a red card

A contentious incident involving Brighton forward Joao Pedro dominated headlines after the Seagulls’ 0-0 draw with Brentford at the Amex Stadium. The 75th-minute flashpoint divided opinions between managers Thomas Frank and Fabian Hurzeler, as well as former referee Mark Clattenburg.

What Happened?

Pedro appeared to be the victim initially, as Yehor Yarmoliuk pulled his shirt, earning the Brentford player a yellow card. Moments later, Pedro swung his arm in retaliation, though no contact was made.

Referee Andy Madley took no action, and the incident was reviewed by VAR, but there was no suggestion to revisit the decision on the field.

Differing Opinions

Thomas Frank, Brentford’s manager, argued Pedro should have been sent off:

“You can’t swing an arm to hit someone, whether you hit them or not. That’s why we have VAR. It happened, and we need to make it better in the future.”

In contrast, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler dismissed the idea of a red card:

“For me, it’s not a red card. Why would it be? You just try to get free from someone.”

Former referee Mark Clattenburg, speaking to Amazon Prime, explained:

“Pedro couldn’t be sent off for contact as there wasn’t any. However, he could have been dismissed for the attempt to strike. From my perspective, the gesture was more toward the referee than an act of brutality.”

Solly March’s Emotional Return

The match could have been remembered for Solly March’s late chance, marking his return after a 14-month injury absence due to a serious knee injury sustained in October 2023 against Manchester City.

March came on as a substitute to a standing ovation and had a golden opportunity in the 94th minute, only to send his shot over the bar.

Reflecting on his return, March said:

“I had too much time to think and changed my mind too many times. I should have gone with my first instinct.”

He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery:

“It’s been a tough 14 months, but the more minutes I get, the better I’ll become. It’s my third serious injury, and each time it takes longer, but I’m determined to return to my best.”

Match Context

The draw left Brighton extending their winless run in the Premier League to six games, while Brentford earned only their second away point of the season. Both teams remain mid-table, seeking consistency as the season progresses.
