Galatasaray and Rizespor Made 6 Substitutions Each! So, What Does the Rule Say?

IMG 20240915 WA0014

In the Galatasaray-Rizespor match, both teams made 6 substitutions.

This was due to a new rule introduced by IFAB this year, which it recommended member federations implement. According to this rule, if a player suffers a concussion during the match, the team is allowed to make an additional substitution. Likewise, the opposing team is also permitted to make 6 substitutions.

In yesterday’s match, Rizespor’s Alikulov had to leave the game in the 38th minute due to a head injury, which granted both teams an additional substitution.

WHAT DOES THE IFAB RULE SAY?

Each team is allowed to make no more than one concussion substitution in a match. A concussion substitution can be made regardless of how many regular substitutions have already been used. When a ‘concussion substitution’ is made, the opposing team is also granted an ‘additional substitution.’

6 SUBSTITUTIONS EACH

For Çaykur Rizespor, Hadziahmetovic, Emrecan Bulut, Eray Korkmaz, Jurecka, and Buljubasic came on for Alikulov, Papanikolau, Taha Şahin, Akintola, Ali Sowe, and Olawoyin.

As for Galatasaray, Kerem Demirbay, Batshuayi, Nelsson, Berkan Kutlu, Elias Jelert, and Yusuf Demir replaced Gabriel Sara, Mertens, Sanchez, Torreira, Jakobs, and Barış Alper Yılmaz.
