Gokhan Gonul Appointed as the New Head Coach of the Turkey U21 National Team

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has officially announced Gökhan Gönül as the new head coach of the Turkey U21 National Team.

New Role for Gökhan Gönül

Gönül takes charge of the U21 National Team after a successful playing career. He had previously represented the Turkish national team as a player.

WHAT HAPPENED? The Turkish Football Federation confirmed that Gökhan Gönül has been appointed as the head coach of the Turkey U21 National Team. Gönül earned 66 caps for the Turkish National Team and was part of the squad that competed in the UEFA Euro 2016 finals.

BIG PICTURE: Gökhan Gönül began his football career at Bursa Yolspor and went on to play professionally for Gençlerbirliği, Gençlerbirliği ASAŞ, Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ, Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, and Çaykur Rizespor. He remains one of the players with the most appearances in Süper Lig history.

During his playing career, Gönül featured in 76 European matches and won multiple domestic titles. With Fenerbahçe, he claimed two Süper Lig titles, two Turkish Cups, and three Turkish Super Cups. He also won one Süper Lig title with Beşiktaş.

The 39-year-old, after retiring from professional football, has been serving as the assistant coach for the Turkey U21 National Team since March this year.
