Turkey currently holds the top position in its group with 4 points after its initial match in the Nations League. The national team is in League B, Group 4, alongside Wales, Iceland, and Montenegro. Teams that finish last in Leagues A and B will be relegated to a lower league for the next season. The four teams that perform well in the Nations League will qualify for the World Cup. With Turkey’s upcoming match against Montenegro, questions arise about their chances of advancing. So, how can Turkey move up in the Nations League?

The UEFA Nations League consists of 54 participating countries divided into four leagues: A, B, C, and D. In Leagues A, B, and C, 16 teams compete in four groups of four, while League D has teams divided into two groups of three. Matches are played in a double round-robin format. After facing Montenegro, Turkey will play against Iceland, Wales, and then again against Montenegro. Turkey aims to maintain its lead in the group.

How Can Turkey Move Up to the Next League in the Nations League?

According to the format of the UEFA Nations League, teams finishing last in Leagues A and B will be relegated to a lower league. The teams at the top of the standings will be promoted to a higher league. If Turkey finishes first in League B ahead of Wales, Iceland, and Montenegro, it will secure its place in League A.

What is the Format of the Nations League?

In a double round-robin format, the teams that finish first in their groups in Leagues B, C, and D will be promoted to a higher league, while those that finish last in Leagues A and B will be relegated.

In League C, two teams with the lowest points/goal difference will be relegated to League D due to having four groups. To determine promotion and relegation, playoffs will be held after the league phase. Teams finishing third in League A will be matched against those finishing second in League B, while those finishing third in League B will face second-placed teams in League C. In League C, the two teams with the lowest points/goal difference will be drawn against second-placed teams in League D.

These playoff matches will be played in a two-legged elimination format, with the winners earning the right to compete in the higher league in the next UEFA Nations League tournament, while the losers will be relegated.

The teams finishing in the top two positions in League A will compete in quarterfinal matches using a double round-robin format. The four teams that succeed will qualify for the final tournament of the UEFA Nations League.

Nations League matches will be held from September 5 to November 19, 2024. Quarterfinal matches in League A and promotion/relegation matches will take place from March 20 to March 25, 2025.

The final tournament, scheduled for June 2025, will feature single-match formats for the semifinals, third-place playoff, and final.

As per the UEFA Executive Committee’s decision on February 28, 2022, Russia will not participate in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League tournament.
