Ian Wright Criticizes Harry Kane Over Comments on England Teammates

Harry Kane has come under fire from England great Ian Wright for remarks he made about players who pulled out of international play prior to England’s 3-0 victory over Greece in the Nations League. With goals from Ollie Watkins, Curtis Jones, and an own goal by Greek goalie Odysseas Vlachodimos, England demonstrated their depth in Athens despite missing a number of important players.

Kane criticized nine players who chose to sit out because of injuries or minor knocks, including Aaron Ramsdale, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice, saying some had “taken advantage” of the situation. Wright, however, justified the players’ choices by citing more general problems with the game.

Wright’s Perspective

Speaking before the match, Wright said:

“What I would say in respect to the players that have pulled out, you would like to have seen them there. But the FA has sent a message by not having the manager for this game. What kind of message are you sending to the players?”

Wright emphasized the challenges posed by scheduling and workload, adding:

“The big issue is the scheduling. Managers and players are both talking about it. If players have knocks and choose to sit out, it should open opportunities for others. This isn’t about blaming players; it’s about understanding the context.”
