Jadon Sancho is determined to prove himself this season following a challenging period at Manchester United, with his loan move to Chelsea offering him a fresh start. The winger, who struggled to justify his £73m price tag at United, is now regaining his form with the Blues after a difficult few years.
Sancho initially rose to prominence at Borussia Dortmund, where his performances earned him a high-profile move to Old Trafford in 2021. However, his time at United was marred by injury setbacks, mental struggles, and a fallout with manager Erik ten Hag, which led to his loan return to Dortmund in 2023. After impressing in Germany, including a notable Champions League semi-final performance, Sancho hoped for a fresh start at United but found himself on the periphery once again.
Now at Chelsea, Sancho is looking to silence his critics. Speaking after scoring in the Blues’ 4-3 victory over Tottenham, he said, “I know that I have a lot of people to prove wrong. I’ve been working very hard. I want to thank the staff and the team for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who brought Sancho to Stamford Bridge, has stressed the importance of consistency. “The reason why Jadon came here is because we think he can help us,” said Maresca. “He had some small issues, but now he’s back. The only thing he needs to do is continue performing at this level. If he drops, he won’t play.”
Sancho’s loan deal with Chelsea includes an obligation to buy for as little as £25m, which could be triggered in the summer, giving him a chance to prove himself and rebuild his reputation.
