Fresh Off US Open Title, Jannik Sinner Cheers as Italy Dominates Davis Cup Group Stage
Jannik Sinner, fresh from his first US Open title, was on hand to support Italy as they completed a dominant week in the Davis Cup group stage in Bologna, Italy. Although Italy had already secured their spot in the Final 8 of the Davis Cup Finals—set to take place in Malaga, Spain, this November—Sinner watched from the sidelines as his teammates finished strong.
Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli both secured wins on Sunday, with Berrettini coming from behind to defeat Botic van de Zandschulp 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Cobolli outlasting Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3. Italy completed the group stage unbeaten, winning all three of their ties, including 2-1 victories over Brazil on Wednesday and Belgium on Friday.
Berrettini was particularly impressive, going 3-0 in singles matches for the week, having previously defeated Brazilian Joao Fonseca and Belgian Alexander Blockx. Italy, the defending Davis Cup champions, will now turn their attention to Malaga, where they’ll aim to retain their title after winning it last November for the first time in 47 years.
