Jannik Sinner Survives Scare in Beijing
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner extended his win streak to 12 matches after a hard-fought victory over Nicolas Jarry at the China Open, overcoming an early setback to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, over in Tokyo, Taylor Fritz suffered a disappointing loss in his Japan Open opener.
Fresh off titles in Cincinnati and the US Open—his second Grand Slam title this year—Sinner was tested in his opening match in Beijing. Facing Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who overpowered the Italian with 11 winners to take the first set, Sinner struggled initially with returning serve. However, the top seed recovered to level the match and dominated the third set, securing the win and continuing his impressive form. Over the last 52 weeks, Sinner holds an outstanding 76-6 match record.
“In the first set I was struggling to return his serve and he broke me,” Sinner said. “I just tried to stay there mentally. The first round at any tournament is never easy, and playing against him is very tough. But I am happy about the performance and how I ended the match.”
Sinner’s next match will be against either wild card Stan Wawrinka or lucky loser Roman Safiullin.
Adrian Mannarino Hits Milestone with 300th Career Win
Elsewhere in Beijing, Adrian Mannarino achieved a significant career milestone, notching his 300th ATP win after coming back from a set down to defeat Lorenzo Sonego 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. The victory comes 16 years after his first career win, showcasing his longevity on the tour.
Other Beijing Highlights
No. 3-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, seeded second in the tournament, is set to begin his campaign on Friday against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
