January Transfer Window Spending on the Rise

Manchester City's Omar Marmoush is the most expensive Premier League player this month so far

Premier League clubs have already spent £247m this month, significantly higher than the £90m spent during the entire January 2024 window, with one week remaining. Manchester City leads the charge, accounting for over £125m, more than the other 19 clubs combined.

Although spending is expected to increase before the window closes on Monday, 3 February (23:00 GMT), it is unlikely to approach the January 2023 record of £815m.

Global Transfer Activity Overview

  • Premier League: £247m so far.
  • Ligue 1: £106m, driven by PSG’s £59m signing of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli.
  • Championship (England): £44m, dwarfing La Liga’s £2m total.
  • La Liga: League One club Huddersfield (£4m+) outspent all 20 Spanish top-flight clubs combined.

Why is Spending Higher This Year?

Ipswich Town have signed three players including £20m Aston Villa winger Jaden Philogene
  • Manchester City’s Title Challenge:
Pep Guardiola’s side, trailing in their title defense, has signed three players for significant fees:
    • Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt) – £59m.
    • Vitor Reis (Palmeiras) – £29.6m.
    • Abdukodir Khusanov (Lens) – £33.6m.

City’s active transfer strategy this January contrasts with their traditionally quieter winter windows.

  • Eased Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR):
Unlike last season, no clubs have been penalized under the Premier League’s spending regulations, giving teams like City the flexibility to spend.
  • Strategic Moves:
Clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool appear to be saving funds for summer acquisitions. Chelsea, on the other hand, is focused on offloading surplus players to stabilize their squad.
