Lee Carsley Responds to Reaction Over Not Singing National Anthem Before England’s Win

Lee Carsley Unmoved by Reaction to Not Singing National Anthem Before England’s Win Over Ireland

England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, has addressed the reaction to his decision not to sing the national anthem before England’s 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League.

Taking charge of his first senior match since being temporarily promoted from his role with the Under-21s, Carsley oversaw a solid win at a sold-out Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The 50-year-old, who represented Ireland 40 times as a player, spoke about his choice not to sing “God Save the King” during the pre-match anthem.

When asked about the reaction to his decision, Carsley said: “It has definitely not affected my day or preparation. I found out about it this morning. I fully respect people’s opinions. It’s something that I’ve never done, but I fully respect both national anthems.”

Reflecting on the occasion, Carsley added, “Today is probably one of the proudest days of my career, leading an England team out in Dublin. You definitely couldn’t have written it.”
