Lewis Hamilton Begins Ferrari Journey with Fiorano Test Drive

Fans gathered near the track to catch a sight of Hamilton in a Ferrari for the first time

Lewis Hamilton has officially started his career with Ferrari by testing a 2023 Formula 1 car at the Fiorano test track. This session marks the seven-time world champion’s first on-track experience with his new team as part of his preparation for the 2025 season.

Hamilton’s Acclimatisation to Ferrari

Hamilton’s first drive is part of a planned acclimatisation process, following two days of factory work at Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello. Running began early on Wednesday, and Hamilton completed his laps by 11:00 local time (10:00 GMT), with teammate Charles Leclerc scheduled to take over in the afternoon.

The test was conducted under F1 regulations that limit drivers to 1,000 kilometers of running in previous cars. This opportunity enables Hamilton to familiarize himself with Ferrari’s engine operations and build a rapport with his new race engineer, Riccardo Adami. Adami previously worked with Carlos Sainz and Sebastian Vettel, bringing extensive experience to the partnership.

Conditions and Atmosphere at Fiorano

The Fiorano track provided Hamilton a private yet high-profile start to his Ferrari career. While the test was held behind closed doors, fans lined nearby bridges to catch a glimpse of the historic moment. The session took place under typical January conditions in Emilia-Romagna: cold and foggy, adding an extra challenge to Hamilton’s debut laps.

What’s Next for Hamilton and Ferrari

Hamilton’s preseason preparation will include additional testing at Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The testing schedule will culminate with Ferrari’s official unveiling of their 2025 F1 car on 19 February.

Hamilton’s first public appearance as a Ferrari driver will take place a day earlier, on 18 February, at the F1 season launch event at London’s O2 Arena. Preseason testing in Bahrain will follow from 26-28 February, before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on 14-16 March.

Building Momentum with Ferrari

This pivotal test session helps Hamilton adapt to Ferrari’s systems, operations, and team dynamics. As fans and pundits eagerly await his performance, this early integration aims to provide the foundation for a successful season with one of F1’s most storied teams.
