Leading LIV Golfer Will Qualify for Royal Portrush
The highest-ranked LIV Golf League player, not already exempt, will earn a spot in The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush this July.
The top player from LIV’s standings after its June event in Dallas will secure a place in the field, marking another significant step toward integrating LIV players into major championships.
Major Championships Expanding LIV Exemptions
This follows the USGA’s recent announcement that the 2024 US Open (Oakmont Country Club, June 12-15) will also offer an exemption to a leading LIV player.
R&A CEO Mark Darbon:
“The Open is a global championship for the best men’s golfers… LIV players should have the opportunity to qualify through individual standings.”
The move acknowledges LIV’s growing role in the sport, ensuring its top performers have a clear path into golf’s biggest events.
Who’s Already Exempt for The Open?
Jon Rahm – Past US Open (2021) & Masters (2023) winner
Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson – Past Open Championship or major winners
Joaquin Niemann & Sergio Garcia – Received special major exemptions
With LIV players now gaining more access to majors, the PGA Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund continue negotiations over a potential resolution to golf’s ongoing split.
