Lucescu’s world record: Made history in Nations League match

The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has published a list based on the first and last matches of national team coaches who have led their national teams. Romanian National Team Coach Mircea Lucescu, who also managed Galatasaray and Besiktas in Turkey, broke a record during the Nations League match against Cyprus. The IFFHS, without considering interruptions, focused on the first and last matches of national team coaches to create the list. According to this list, Lucescu, who led Romania in his first match on November 11, 1981, against Switzerland, made history in the Nations League with a 3-0 win over Cyprus. Lucescu became the coach with the longest tenure, considering only the first and last matches, with a span of 42 years and 332 days. Before Lucescu, this record belonged to Paraguay’s coach Manuel Fleitas Solich, who led his first match on September 24, 1922, and his last on August 22, 1965.
