Khusanov’s “Horrific Start” in Man City Debut Against Chelsea

No player has made more errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season than Robert Sanchez, with his five goal-leading mistakes also the most since 2007-08 by a Chelsea player in a single campaign

It was a night Abdukodir Khusanov will never forget, but not for the right reasons. Making his Premier League debut for Manchester City, the £33.6m January signing from Lens gifted Chelsea an early lead with a critical error.

Pep Guardiola admitted it “was not the best start,” while Erling Haaland called it a “horrific start for the team.” Despite Khusanov’s struggles, City recovered with a dominant 3-1 victory to climb back into the Premier League’s top four.

The Nightmare Start for Khusanov

It only took four minutes for Khusanov to make an error. A misjudged header in City’s defensive half landed at the feet of Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, who set up Noni Madueke for an easy finish. Minutes later, Khusanov compounded his shaky start by losing possession again and earning the fastest yellow card on a Premier League debut since 2018.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp sympathized with the 20-year-old:

“When you get into that position, it’s like your head is in a tumble dryer.”

Gary Neville added:

“I felt like crying for the lad.”

Guardiola and Haaland Rally Behind Khusanov

Despite the difficult start, Guardiola emphasized the importance of learning from such experiences:

“He is so young and has come for many years. He didn’t make one training session with us. Mistakes happen, but we will work with him.”

The substitution of Khusanov for John Stones in the second half wasn’t due to the error but rather to preserve the defender after his early booking.

Man City’s Comeback: Gvardiol, Haaland, and Foden Shine

After conceding early, City responded strongly. Goals from Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden secured a vital win. Haaland’s goal was a highlight, capitalizing on an error by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to calmly chip the ball into the net.

Haaland praised his new teammate Omar Marmoush, saying:

“You can see he has something special. It’s going to be fantastic playing with him.”

Marmoush Impresses on Debut

Omar Marmoush, another January signing, showed flashes of brilliance. While his goal was ruled out for offside, his combination play with Haaland hinted at a promising partnership.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer commented:

“He was bright, lively, and brought energy. His understanding with Haaland showed promise.”

Chelsea’s Struggles Continue

While City celebrated, Chelsea faced more questions. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez made his fifth error leading directly to a goal this season.

Sky’s Jamie Redknapp criticized Sanchez’s decision-making during Haaland’s goal:

“Just stay where you are. Why make Haaland’s mind up for him?”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca maintained trust in Sanchez but hinted at potential changes ahead of their match against West Ham. Filip Jorgensen, who has started two Premier League games this season, could replace Sanchez.

What’s Next for Khusanov and City?

Despite his tough debut, Khusanov’s potential remains undoubted. Guardiola assured fans that the young defender would improve:

“We need to support him. He will learn and grow stronger.”

Man City will need all hands on deck as they face Club Brugge in a crucial Champions League play-off qualification match on Wednesday.
