Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision to sever Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassador contract, which infuriated both supporters and former players, Manchester United’s players have been urged to foot the £2 million salary of the famous manager.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has terminated Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role at Manchester United in an effort to reduce the team’s finances. After stepping down from management, the 82-year-old has held the position for more than ten years and has come to represent the team internationally. There has been opposition to the decision since many people believe Ferguson is essential to the club’s identity.
Stuart Pearce’s Proposal: Players to Fund Ferguson’s Salary
Amidst the controversy, former Manchester City and England defender Stuart Pearce proposed that United’s players, or even their City rivals, could step in to pay Ferguson’s salary. Speaking to talkSPORT, Pearce suggested:
“Wouldn’t it be good if the United squad said we’ll fund that money per season to keep Alex in the post because he’s too important to this club?”
Pearce added a mischievous idea:
“What if Manchester City players said, ‘wouldn’t it be good if we chipped in and paid Alex Ferguson’s wages each year to keep him in place for what he’s done for that club across the road?’ That is going to inspire us on a weekly basis. It would be classy. You’ve sacked your best ever, but we’ll fund him, it’s no problem.”
