Rodri and Haaland Back in Training at Crucial Stage of the Season

Just when it mattered most, Manchester City have been handed a monumental lift in their pursuit of silverware at home and abroad. Star midfielder Rodri and prolific striker Erling Haaland have both returned to first-team training as the season heads into its final, pivotal stretch. With just four Premier League matches remaining, and the Club World Cup looming on the horizon, Pep Guardiola could hardly have asked for better news.

Rodri, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in September, has been sorely missed. The Spaniard’s absence triggered an uncharacteristic wobble in form for a Manchester City side that usually operates with ruthless consistency. His return now injects fresh hope into a team still pushing for a strong finish.

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland is also back training with the squad after a spell out due to an ankle injury suffered in March. The Norwegian goal machine has missed crucial fixtures, but his presence in training is a welcome sight as Manchester City prepare for a challenging end to their domestic campaign and an international showcase in Miami.

Guardiola’s Tactical Shifts in Rodri and Haaland’s Absence

Dealing with the absence of two cornerstone players was always going to be a huge test for Pep Guardiola. Without Rodri, Manchester City’s midfield often looked less assured, both in transition and while in possession. A lot of responsibility fell on the shoulders of Mateo Kovacic, Kalvin Phillips, and the evergreen Ilkay Gundogan (before his move), but none truly replicated Rodri’s balance of composure, distribution, and defensive cover.

Guardiola pivoted to a more compact 4-2-2-2 formation, emphasizing collective midfield play and tighter lines between the back and forward lines. The system sacrificed some width and offensive flair but helped stabilize the team. Despite the tactical compromise, Manchester City managed to reach the FA Cup Final and remain in contention for Champions League qualification.

Haaland’s injury, meanwhile, forced Guardiola to adapt the attack. Julian Alvarez stepped up, operating either as a false nine or a second striker. At times, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish also had to adjust to more central roles. While the goals continued to trickle in, the fear factor that Haaland brings to every opposition defense was notably absent.

Fitness Update: What the Return of Rodri and Haaland Means

According to reports from Sky Sports News, Rodri is now back in full team training and participating in all sessions without restriction. Haaland is also back on the grass, gradually easing back into full involvement.

Still, there’s no rush. Guardiola is reportedly cautious about reintroducing either player too soon. Manchester City’s fixture list includes upcoming games against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton, Fulham, and Bournemouth. On paper, these are winnable fixtures for a team of Manchester City’s caliber, and Guardiola may opt to manage minutes carefully.

It’s also important to note that defenders Nathan Ake and John Stones have not yet returned to training. That could influence Guardiola’s defensive choices, especially if Rodri is needed as a makeshift center-back or a more defensively focused pivot in midfield.

Looking Ahead: The Club World Cup in Miami

While the Premier League is still very much a priority, Manchester City also have their eyes on global glory. This summer, Guardiola’s men will head to Miami for the inaugural edition of FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup.

The tournament promises to be a landmark moment in global club football, and Manchester City have been drawn into a challenging group. They’ll face Moroccan side Wydad AC, now managed by the iconic Hernan Crespo, as well as Serie A giants Juventus. Chelsea will join Manchester City as England’s other representative.

The competition offers a unique chance for Manchester City to assert their dominance on the world stage—a goal that would cap Guardiola’s tenure with another feather in his cap. It’s also likely the stage where Rodri and Haaland will make their full return to competitive action.

Managing Player Returns: Guardiola’s Balancing Act

Given the congested nature of the football calendar, Guardiola will be keen to avoid rushing either player. The medical team will likely adopt a phased return strategy, especially for Rodri, whose injury involved a ligament that often requires cautious rehabilitation.

There’s also the emotional factor. Rodri has been a leader on and off the pitch. His influence goes beyond his ball-playing abilities—he brings structure and calmness to the team. Likewise, Haaland’s return is not just about goals, but also the psychological edge he gives to his teammates and the fear he instills in defenders.

Don’t be surprised if Guardiola chooses to rest them during some of the remaining league fixtures, perhaps bringing them on as substitutes or using them sparingly. Their full return may be timed for the FA Cup Final against Crystal Palace on 17 May, before a more extended role in the Club World Cup.

Manchester City’s Run-In: Can They Finish Strong?

Despite losing their grip on the Premier League crown, Manchester City remain in the hunt for trophies. The final four matches of the domestic campaign are all against teams currently in the lower half of the table. That, combined with the return of key players, makes for a tantalizing finish.

A top-four finish is essential—not just for pride but for securing Champions League football next season. The return of Rodri and Haaland could be the final piece of the puzzle for Guardiola as he aims to end the campaign on a high.

For Manchester City fans, it’s time to dare to believe again. With two of their most important stars back in the fold, the closing chapter of the 2024/25 season could still deliver a memorable ending.
