Manchester United approach Barcelona over Frenkie de Jong transfer – report
Manchester United are now turning to Barcelona star, Frenkie de Jong, to strengthen their midfield this summer.
The Red Devils have been keen followers of the Dutch star for some time now, having missed out on signing him two years ago.
Now in the wake of their deal for Manuel Ugarte stalling, United are reviewing their previous transfer targets for potential deals this summer.
Although United are reportedly still in contact with Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for the Uruguay international, the Red Devils are being more proactive in looking at other options.
Recently the club have looked to Burnley’s Sander Berge, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and recent United loanee Sofyan Amrabat.
However, recent reports claim that United’s long-term interest in de Jong is resurfacing.
United renew interest in de Jong
ManchesterWorld have reported that United have now approached Barcelona around de Jong’s availability this summer.
It’s understood that the Premier League side are interested in a deal if it can be completed for under £40 million.
It’s unknown at this time if Barcelona would be interested in selling their star, with Hansi Flick reportedly keen to include de Jong in his plans.
Erik ten hag will be hoping to secure the Netherlands international’s signature, having a real appreciation for the midfielder. The pair worked with each other at Ajax where he played alongside another United target, Matthijs de Ligt who could also be moving to Old Trafford in the coming weeks.
United’s interest in the midfielder dates back to 2022, where he was their main focus for the summer. Unfortunately a deal couldn’t be reached, leading to a last minute signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid.
Although the transfer talks are only just beginning, United still have three weeks to get a deal across the line to see de Jong join the Red Devils this summer.
