‘Not Impossible’ Mbeumo Will Stay at Brentford – Giles

Bryan Mbeumo joined Brentford from French club Troyes in 2019

Brentford Say Mbeumo Could Stay Despite Man Utd Interest

Brentford’s director of football Phil Giles says it’s “not impossible” that Bryan Mbeumo remains at the club next season, despite serious interest from Manchester United.

United have had two bids rejected for the Cameroon international, the second worth up to £62.5m, and Mbeumo has reportedly told the club he wishes to join the Red Devils.

Mbeumo Still in Dialogue with Brentford

Speaking to BBC Sport on Monday, Giles confirmed there has been “not so much” progress in terms of finalising a deal.

“He had a fantastic season,” said Giles. “We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him.”

“He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career. He is well within his rights to do that. It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay.”

Giles was firm in stating that any potential exit would only happen on Brentford’s terms.

“He is certainly one of our best players, if not our best player, and we need our best players. There’s no harm in keeping your best players.”

United Keen, Brentford Hold Firm

Manchester United remain keen to secure Mbeumo’s services as part of their squad revamp under new sporting structure led by Dan Ashworth and Erik ten Hag. However, Brentford’s firm stance means any deal will need to match their valuation and provide sufficient return for their star forward.

Mbeumo, 25, scored 10 goals and provided 6 assists last season and is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most versatile attackers.

Norgaard Set for Arsenal Switch

In the same interview, Giles also confirmed that club captain Christian Norgaard is closing in on a move to Arsenal.

BBC Sport previously reported that a fee of up to £15m including add-ons has been agreed between the two Premier League clubs for the Denmark international.

“We have been in conversations with Arsenal for the last week to 10 days,” said Giles. “As it stands it hasn’t been completed yet but it is heading in that direction.”

“If that happens for him then fantastic, he’s earned it. He’s been a brilliant captain for us.”

What’s Next for Brentford?

Should Mbeumo stay, it would be a massive boost to manager Thomas Frank ahead of Brentford’s move into their fifth consecutive Premier League season.

Meanwhile, the departure of Norgaard could prompt midfield reinforcements, with the Bees expected to be active in the transfer window.
