Michael Cheika Begins Leicester Tigers Reign with Last-Gasp Win Over Exeter Chiefs

Michael Cheika’s tenure as Leicester Tigers head coach got off to a thrilling start as his side claimed a dramatic 17-14 victory over Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park on the opening weekend of the Gallagher Premiership. A stoppage-time try from Wales international flanker Tommy Reffell secured an impressive away win for the Tigers.

In what was largely an error-strewn affair, Exeter took control in the second half with tries from No. 8 Greg Fisilau and scrum-half Tom Cairns. Full-back Josh Hodge added two conversions, giving the Chiefs a cushion. However, Leicester fought back with a try from flanker Hanro Liebenberg and a drop goal from Jamie Shillcock, before Reffell’s late touchdown sealed the comeback. Ben Volavola kicked the crucial conversion to secure the win.

Cheika, the former head coach of Australia and Argentina, was appointed this summer to replace Dan McKellar, tasked with reviving the fortunes of a Leicester side that finished eighth last season. This opening victory marks a strong start to his Premiership campaign.
