West Ham Striker Recovering After Surgery on Broken Leg
Michail Antonio, West Ham’s all-time leading Premier League scorer, has been discharged from hospital over three weeks after sustaining a broken leg in a car accident on 7 December. The 34-year-old Jamaica international underwent surgery following the crash in Epping, Essex, where he had to be rescued from his car before being transported to a central London hospital.
Antonio’s absence has been felt on the pitch, but his spirit continues to inspire. He addressed his teammates via video call before their 2-1 victory against Wolves on 9 December, where the squad honored him by wearing special ‘Antonio 9’ shirts during the pre-match warmup.
West Ham Praises First Responders and Announces Charitable Donation
West Ham has publicly thanked the emergency services, NHS staff, and air ambulance personnel who assisted Antonio after the accident. In a touching gesture, the club has pledged to donate £60,000 to the NHS and Air Ambulances UK charities, raised from the auction of the ‘Antonio 9’ shirts.
“Everyone at the club would like to reiterate their heartfelt thanks to the first responders, emergency services, air ambulance staff, and the NHS for the incredible support given to Michail in the wake of the accident,” West Ham stated on Tuesday.
A Miracle Recovery, Says Lopetegui
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui described Antonio’s recovery as a “miracle” earlier this month. Despite the severity of the accident and the surgical procedure, Antonio is now on the mend. His road to full fitness will be long, but the football community and fans have rallied around the striker in his time of need.
Antonio remains West Ham’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, with 68 goals in 268 appearances, making his return to the squad highly anticipated.
