Historic Victory for Monfils
Gael Monfils claimed his 13th tour-level title with a straight-sets win over Belgium’s Zizou Bergs (6-3, 6-4) in the ASB Classic final in Auckland, becoming the oldest ATP Tour singles champion at 38 years and four months.
This achievement breaks the previous record held by Roger Federer, who won the Basel title in 2019 at 38 years and two months.
“It means a lot. Age is a number,” Monfils said. “We keep working, and I believe I can still play high-quality tennis. I’ve shown it this week, so I’m very happy.”
Monfils now holds the distinction of being the oldest man to win a tour-level title since Ken Rosewall won in Hong Kong at age 43 in 1977.
Next Stop: Australian Open
Ranked world number 52, Monfils will now head to the Australian Open, where he faces fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round.
