Newcastle’s Matt Targett Ruled Out of Man City Clash

Newcastle United’s left-back Matt Targett won’t be part of the blockbuster clash against Manchester City this weekend, but the reason behind his absence isn’t your typical football injury. The former Aston Villa star has been hit by a condition that’s rarely seen on the football pitch—eczema.

After an injury-hit 2023/24 campaign, Targett’s struggle with fitness continues. The 29-year-old hasn’t played a single match for Newcastle this season, and just when it seemed like he could be getting back on track, a new setback has emerged.

The Reason Behind the Absence? Eczema

Manager Eddie Howe lifted the lid on the unusual cause during his pre-match press conference on Friday. “Matt had a flare-up of eczema, so he’s been nursing that the last couple of weeks,” Howe revealed. “It’s been quite a bad episode for him. We’re hoping to get him back to training, but he won’t play this weekend.”

When Will He Be Back?

Although eczema might not sound as serious as a muscle injury, severe flare-ups can be a huge hindrance to any player. Targett is receiving treatment, but it’s unclear when he’ll be ready to return. Here’s hoping the left-back can manage the condition and get back to his best soon. Until then, Newcastle will have to find other solutions against Pep Guardiola’s high-flying City side.
