Women’s Nations League Group B1 Ends with Hard-Fought Point
Simone Magill’s first-half goal helped Northern Ireland claim a valuable 1-1 draw in Zenica, securing a promotion play-off place in the UEFA Women’s Nations League.
The result ensures Tanya Oxtoby’s side finish second in Group B1, and they will now face a play-off against one of Austria, Iceland, Belgium, or Denmark in the autumn, for a spot in League A.
Magill Strikes, but Bosnia Fight Back
Northern Ireland entered the match knowing a draw would be enough to hold on to second place. Despite a nervy start, Magill gave them the lead in the 23rd minute, racing onto Rebecca Holloway’s incisive through ball and finishing coolly into the bottom corner.
However, Bosnia-Herzegovina responded just six minutes later, with Sofija Krajsumovic pouncing on a defensive lapse to level the score, slotting past Jackie Burns in sweltering conditions.
Chances at Both Ends, but Level Terms Hold
Northern Ireland created several more chances in the first half, with Megan Bell and Brenna McPartlan both testing Bosnian goalkeeper Almina Hodzic. At the other end, Una Rankic struck the post with a free-kick just before the break.
The second half saw fewer clear-cut chances due to the sapping heat, but Rachel Dugdale and Ellie Mason stood firm defensively. Substitute Keri Halliday injected fresh energy, linking well with Magill, who nearly found a late winner.
Promotion Play-Off Beckons
The 1-1 draw was enough for Northern Ireland to retain their position in the group and earn a spot in the League A promotion play-off for the first time in their history.
