Pat Cummins Likely to Miss Champions Trophy as Australia Face Injury Crisis

Pat Cummins led Australia to victory in the 50-over World Cup in 2023

Australia captain Pat Cummins is “hugely unlikely” to recover in time for the Champions Trophy, according to head coach Andrew McDonald.

The 31-year-old fast bowler, who is currently missing the Test series in Sri Lanka, is dealing with an ankle injury while also celebrating the birth of his second child.

Australia’s Injury Concerns Ahead of the Tournament

Pat Cummins (Ankle injury, unlikely to play)
Josh Hazlewood (Calf & side issues, doubtful)
Mitchell Marsh (Back injury, ruled out)

This leaves Australia’s pace attack weakened, with only Mitchell Starc and Nathan Ellis currently fit.

Who Will Captain Australia in Cummins’ Absence?

With Cummins sidelined, Australia must appoint a new ODI captain.

Two Leading Candidates:
Steve Smith – 59 ODIs as captain, currently leading Australia in Sri Lanka.
Travis Head – Led Australia in one T20 match but has never captained in ODIs.

Andrew McDonald on the captaincy decision:

“Pat Cummins hasn’t resumed bowling, so we do need a captain. Smith and Head are the two we’re considering.”

Australia’s Champions Trophy Schedule

Tournament Start Date: 19 February (Pakistan & UAE)
Group Stage Opponents:
England (22 Feb)
Afghanistan
South Africa

Deadline for Squad Changes: 12 February

With limited time left, Australia must finalize their squad and leadership decision soon.

🇦🇺 Who Could Replace Cummins & Hazlewood?

Australia has a few backup options in the pace department:

Sean Abbott
Spencer Johnson
Lance Morris

These bowlers featured in Australia’s 2-1 ODI series loss against Pakistan and could step in if needed.
