AC Milan Sack Paulo Fonseca After Just Six Months

AC Milan have won seven of their 17 league matches this season

AC Milan have parted ways with manager Paulo Fonseca after only six months in charge. The decision follows a 1-1 draw against Roma that left the seven-time European champions struggling in both Serie A and the Champions League.

Milan’s Current Struggles

  • Milan are currently eighth in Serie A, sitting 14 points behind joint-leaders Atalanta and Napoli.
  • In the Champions League, they are 12th in the 36-team table, with four wins and two losses in their six matches.

Fonseca, who replaced Stefano Pioli in June, was unable to replicate the success of his predecessor. Under Pioli, Milan finished second in Serie A last season and claimed their first league title in 11 years in 2022.

Milan’s Statement and Fonseca’s Reaction

Milan announced Fonseca’s dismissal in an official statement:

“The club extends its gratitude to Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.”

As he left the San Siro on Sunday night, Fonseca confirmed the news to reporters:

“Yes, it’s true. I’m out. That’s life. I did everything I could.”

What’s Next for Milan?

Milan’s next challenge is the Italian Super Cup semi-final against Juventus, with the first leg on 3 January and the second on 18 January.

Italian media reports suggest Sergio Conceicao, the former Porto manager, is the leading candidate to succeed Fonseca. Conceicao left Porto in June after six successful seasons, during which he claimed multiple Primeira Liga titles.

What Went Wrong for Fonseca?

Fonseca’s tenure was marred by inconsistency and an inability to maintain Milan’s competitive edge:

  • Milan struggled to convert draws into wins, causing them to fall behind in the Serie A title race.
  • Despite a decent Champions League campaign, their domestic form failed to meet expectations.

Looking Ahead

With a vital Super Cup clash and the second half of the season looming, Milan will need swift changes to revive their campaign. If reports are accurate, Sergio Conceicao could be tasked with steering Milan back on course.
