Canadian Soccer Legend Christine Sinclair to Retire After 2024 NWSL Season
Portland Thorns and Canada WNT striker Christine Sinclair, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of women’s soccer, has announced she will retire after the 2024 NWSL season.
On Friday, Sinclair shared on Instagram that she will hang up her boots following the conclusion of the upcoming NWSL season, closing a remarkable career that spans over two decades at both the club and international levels.
Sinclair’s Legacy in Portland and Beyond
Sinclair is a true icon of women’s soccer in both the NWSL and internationally. A Portland legend through and through, she began her soccer journey playing for the University of Portland before staying in Oregon to represent Thorns FC for 12 seasons. She has captained the Thorns since their inaugural season in 2013 and led the team to three NWSL Championships and two NWSL Shields.
However, Sinclair’s achievements stretch beyond her club career. She is a pivotal figure in Canadian soccer, holding the title as the country’s all-time leading scorer with 190 international goals—a record that also stands as the most goals scored by any player, male or female, in international soccer history. With 54 assists and 331 appearances for the national team, she has cemented herself as a mainstay of the sport.
