Gregg Popovich to Step Away from Coaching Due to Heart Concerns
San Antonio Spurs’ legendary head coach Gregg Popovich will be away from the court for an indefinite period due to heart health concerns. The five-time NBA champion experienced health issues prior to the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and assistant coach Mitch Johnson will temporarily take over as head coach.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the 75-year-old Popovich’s health concerns became known to Johnson only two and a half hours before the Timberwolves matchup. Johnson commented on the situation, stating:
“He’s not feeling well. This has happened before. We always believe the next man needs to be ready. We’ve experienced this with injuries, and sometimes people get sick or don’t feel well, or life happens. He’s just not feeling great.”
Popovich holds the record for the most wins in NBA history, with 1,390 regular-season victories and 170 playoff wins, marking a remarkable 29-season tenure with the Spurs.
