How Atlanta United Neutralized Lionel Messi to Knock Inter Miami Out of MLS Cup Play-offs

Goalie Brad Guzan of Atlanta United has provided insights into how his squad defeated Lionel Messi, who is commonly considered the “best player in the world,” to force Inter Miami out of the MLS Cup playoffs.

With an outstanding point total, Inter Miami went into the postseason as the Supporters’ Shield champions. They struggled at the first play-off hurdle after a string of defeats, even though they had a winning start against Atlanta. Even though Messi scored in the game that decided the outcome, the Argentine star’s season ended without a trophy as the game ended 3-2 in Atlanta’s favor at Chase Stadium.

What Guzan Said

Former USMNT goalkeeper Guzan explained how Atlanta managed to counter Miami’s star-studded lineup:

“Obviously [Miami] have a very good team with very good individuals who are extremely talented – best player in the world. And so we don’t have that. And so how do we make up the difference? We make that up with working for each other, and defending and doing hard running and tackling. When you do things like that, you’re able to give yourself an opportunity. And tonight, we were able to take those chances and finish it off.”
