Mertens put the final word: “For me, it’s over now”

Since not being called up to the squad after the 2022 World Cup, Mertens has said that his national team career is now over. The 37-year-old player said, “Tedesco talked to me and explained the situation. I’m very happy and grateful that he came and explained it to me. But for me, it’s all over now, and I am just a fan.”

However, the experienced star left the door slightly open, saying, “If 10 players get injured or no one is available, Tedesco can always call me.”

Mertens has played 109 matches for the Belgium national team, scoring 21 goals.
