A retired officer from the Homicide Bureau claims that the attack on Serhat Akın was carried out using the “Escobar” technique, which originated from Colombia.
Former footballer Serhat Akın was shot.
The attack was evaluated by a retired police officer.
He stated that the attack used the “Escobar” technique.
WHAT HAPPENED? Former Fenerbahçe and national football player, now commentator Serhat Akın, was the victim of a shooting attack late at night in Beykoz. After finishing a program with fellow commentator Berkay Tokgöz, he was targeted by an unknown assailant while exiting the studio.
WHAT WAS SAID? Retired police officer Savaş Kurtbaba from the Homicide Bureau analyzed the incident for Hürriyet: “This is a signal, a warning: ‘Stop talking, or next time we’ll aim for your head.’ They contract motorcyclists for these hits. This is a tactic used by mafia gangs like Barış Boyun’s gang, Daltonlar, Red Kits, and more recently, the Caspers. It’s a mafia-style attack, a contract hit. This bullet sends a message. Serhat gets attention because he’s famous, but today they shot his leg, tomorrow it could be his head. This is known as the ‘Escobar technique,’ and it came to Turkey from Colombia. These gangs also engage in extortion, taking over businesses. Law enforcement must work to bring these criminal operations to an end.”
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE ATTACK? As Akın was about to enter his car, a masked motorcyclist dismounted, ran towards him, and shot him once in the right leg. Akın managed to take cover behind his car. The shooter quickly fled the scene with an accomplice on the waiting motorcycle.
The police are currently searching for the two suspects. Serhat Akın, after receiving immediate first aid at the scene, was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery yesterday.
