Thomas Tuchel Explains ‘Straightforward’ Decision to Take England Job

Despite rumors that connected him to a possible Manchester United position in the midst of Erik ten Hag’s difficulties, Thomas Tuchel has stated that taking up the England manager position was an easy choice.

Tuchel’s appointment as England’s new manager was officially confirmed by the Football Association (FA) following an agreement on an 18-month deal. Both German and English media have responded differently to his appointment; several supporters and former players have expressed doubts about the choice.

Tuchel’s Reasoning Behind the Move

Speaking at a press conference, Tuchel explained that he was impressed by the FA’s approach, which made the decision to accept the job an easy one.

“The idea and the way John [McDermott, technical director] and Mark [Bullingham, chief executive] presented it was very fast and confidential. It was very straightforward; it was a decision for this job and not against anything else.” Tuchel said.

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss shared that he wasn’t initially certain the England job was right for him, particularly given the different schedule from club football. However, he was drawn to the opportunity and excited by the FA’s football-focused vision.

“They made it clear it’s about football and that got me excited. I always wanted to come back to England, that was my big goal. The offer came at the right time, and we found a vision to share. Now I have to live up to it. I know there are some trophies, and I want to help that happen.”
