Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim admits that his position is at risk if he fails to deliver a winning team, despite the club’s significant investment in securing his services.
While Old Trafford insiders emphasize their full support for Amorim, recent results have caused unease among the fanbase.
Fan Frustrations Growing
Discontent was evident during Manchester United’s 2-0 Boxing Day defeat to Wolves at Molineux. Away fans booed the team at the final whistle, and as the players exited to a backdrop of empty yellow seats, the frustration was palpable.
“The manager of Manchester United can never, no matter what, feel comfortable,” said Amorim.
Reflecting on his early struggles, Amorim added:
“You can argue I’ve been here one month and had only four training sessions, but we’re not winning. That’s the reality.”
Underwhelming Start for Amorim
Since his appointment last month, Amorim has secured only seven points from seven Premier League games, a marginal improvement over Wolves boss Vitor Pereira, who has won both matches since taking charge.
Amorim’s record of five defeats in 10 games is the worst for any new Manchester United manager since Walter Crickmer’s tenure in the 1930s.
This is a stark contrast to the club’s high expectations following Amorim’s appointment, a decision led by chief executive Omar Berrada, who reportedly flew to Lisbon to secure the deal. United paid £10.6m in compensation to release Amorim from his Sporting contract.
Despite the hefty investment, Amorim is under no illusions about his precarious position:
“If we don’t win, regardless of the buyout clause, every manager is in danger. That’s the job, and I like it.”
Key Upcoming Fixtures: Newcastle and Liverpool
Amorim faces a crucial five-day break between United’s home game against Newcastle on December 30 and a challenging away trip to title favorites Liverpool on January 5.
The break offers the longest preparation time Amorim has had since taking over. With limited transfer activity expected in January due to the club’s Profit and Sustainability constraints, Amorim will need to maximize the current squad’s potential.
“It’s tough, but there’s no point talking about the past or thinking about what could have been,” he said.
“We have to survive, improve, and build confidence within the team.”
Ronaldo’s Support for Amorim
Cristiano Ronaldo, a United legend and Portuguese compatriot of Amorim, has voiced his support for the under-pressure manager.
Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, where he was named the Best Middle East Player of 2024, Ronaldo expressed optimism:
“Amorim did a fantastic job in Portugal with Sporting. The Premier League is the toughest league in the world, but storms don’t last forever. I hope the best for Manchester United, a club I still love.”
Ronaldo also touched on the broader challenges at United, likening the club’s issues to a recurring sickness:
“It’s not just about the coaches. If the system is flawed, changing the coach won’t fix it. That’s the problem at Manchester United.”
Why Amorim’s Journey is Key for Manchester United’s Revival
As Amorim faces a crucial period, fans and analysts will closely watch his ability to navigate these challenges and deliver results. Will he prove to be the manager who can weather the storm and guide United back to glory?
