Ruben Amorim Targets Players from Sporting Lisbon
Manchester United’s new boss, Ruben Amorim, is planning to sign young star Geovany Quenda from his former club. The 39-year-old Amorim has become one of Europe’s top young coaches after winning two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting Lisbon in the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons. In the latter stages of his time at Sporting, the 17-year-old Geovany Quenda emerged as one of the standout players, and reports suggest that the new United manager is looking to bring him to Old Trafford.
According to Portuguese sports publication A Bola, Amorim is closely monitoring Quenda’s development and evaluating the possibility of signing the young winger, potentially as a replacement for Antony during his issues at Old Trafford. However, this does not seem to be one of Amorim’s primary concerns as he arrives at Carrington; despite making some strong signings over the summer, United is going through a very challenging period and urgently needs a reset on the pitch before focusing on the January transfer window.
Quenda made his debut for Sporting on August 3, 2024, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to score a goal, achieving this feat at just 17 years and 95 days old. Born in 2007, it’s noteworthy that he was only six years old during the season when United last won the Premier League.
What’s Next for Quenda and Amorim?
Amorim will officially take charge at United on November 11, giving him some time to share more insights with the young winger. However, if the Red Devils get what they want, there’s a possibility that Quenda could join the club in January. In any case, Amorim’s clear talent for developing young players bodes well for United’s youth, including talents like Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho.
