Cons: Smith 4
Castres (3) 8
Try: Colonna
Pen: Le Brun
Northampton Saints kicked off their Investec Champions Cup campaign in impressive style, securing a dominant 38-8 victory over Castres at a blustery Franklin’s Gardens. The Premiership champions were in full control from the start, claiming a comfortable bonus-point win.
The Saints started with intent, taking the lead through a powerful finish from captain Fraser Dingwall. Castres responded with a Louis Le Brun penalty, but Northampton Saints quickly reasserted themselves, with Temo Mayanavanua powering over the line to extend their lead. As Storm Darragh intensified across the East Midlands, both teams resorted to tactical kicking and playing for territory.
After the break, with conditions slightly improving, Northampton Saints showed their attacking prowess once again. Tommy Freeman was quick to react to a penalty, releasing Juarno Augustus for a try in the corner. Saints secured the bonus point soon after with a try from Curtis Langdon, and Augustus doubled his tally by being driven over the line by his teammates. Castres managed a late consolation try from Pierre Colonna, but it was Saints who had the final say. Teenager Henry Pollock, making his European debut, capped off the victory with a strong solo finish, showcasing his potential for both club and country.
This result gives Northampton Saints a boost as they prepare for their next European outing against the Bulls in South Africa on Saturday, 14 December. Castres, meanwhile, will host Munster in their next fixture the night before.
Saints’ Changing of the Guard?
The match, disrupted by harsh weather, provided a challenging but rewarding opportunity for Northampton Saints to refocus on their European ambitions. Despite a tough start to their domestic season, the Saints used this Champions Cup clash to show their resilience. Director of Rugby Phil Dowson gave 19-year-old flanker Henry Pollock his European debut, and the young talent certainly impressed.
Pollock has had a breakout season with Saints, earning plaudits for his performances with England A during the autumn internationals. Against Castres, Pollock showcased his defensive work, breaking down opposition attacks, while his powerful carrying made a real impact. As Juarno Augustus, the man-of-the-match and the Saints’ main ball carrier, is set to join Ulster next year, the stage is set for Pollock to step up even further.
In the final moments of the match, Pollock delivered a trademark performance, spinning and charging through Castres defenders before diving over the line for his first European try. His ability to deliver under pressure could be a key asset for Northampton Saints going forward, as they look to continue their European journey.
