Salah: ‘Far Away’ from New Liverpool Deal

Mohamed Salah has both scored and assisted in eight different Premier League games for Liverpool this season, already the most any player has done so in an entire campaign

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has revealed that he is “far away” from signing a new contract with the club, despite his exceptional performances this season. Salah’s current deal expires at the end of the season, allowing him to negotiate a free transfer with non-English clubs starting 1 January.

The 32-year-old Egyptian scored his 20th goal of the season during Liverpool’s dominant 5-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, extending the Reds’ lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points.

Salah’s Future Uncertain

Speaking after the match, Salah told Sky Sports:

“No, we are far away from that [contract], and I don’t want to put anything in the media. The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of that.”

Salah emphasized his commitment to the team’s success this season:

“I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There are a few other teams catching up with us, and we need to stay focused and humble.”

Contract Concerns for Liverpool Stars

Salah is not the only Liverpool player nearing the end of his contract. Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the final months of their deals. Despite this, Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains unconcerned about the possibility of the trio signing pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs:

“I think I have a lot of control over what they do. On the pitch, I see what Virgil, Trent, and Mo bring, and I’m really pleased.”

Salah previously expressed frustration earlier in the season over the club’s failure to offer him a new deal. After Liverpool’s recent win over Manchester City, Salah hinted at the uncertainty surrounding his future, saying he played the match “as if it were the last time” he’d face Pep Guardiola’s side.

What Pundits Are Saying

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy remains optimistic that Salah will sign a new contract:

“I hope it’s a little bit of gameplay in terms of the negotiations. Every Liverpool supporter wants him to stay, and I’ve got a really positive feeling that he’ll stay. These things take time when you’re talking about huge amounts of money.”

Murphy highlighted Salah’s importance to Liverpool, calling him the “most important player Liverpool have at the moment.”

Salah’s Remarkable Statistics

Salah’s record-breaking performances this season further underline his value to Liverpool:

  • Salah has both scored and assisted in eight Premier League games this season, already a league record for an entire campaign.
  • He has been involved in 30 goals (17 goals, 13 assists) in just 18 Premier League games, the fewest appearances needed to reach 30 goal involvements in a single campaign.
  • Across all competitions in 2024, Salah has contributed to 52 goals (29 goals, 23 assists), more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.
  • Salah has scored 20+ goals in all competitions in each of his eight seasons with Liverpool, a feat surpassed in the Premier League era only by Alan Shearer (10) and Harry Kane (9).

What’s Next for Salah and Liverpool?

As Liverpool push for the Premier League title, Salah’s future remains a pressing question. Can the Reds secure a new deal for their talisman, or will this season mark the end of Salah’s historic tenure at Anfield?
