From £73m Dream Transfer to a Career in Limbo
In 2021, Jadon Sancho completed a long-awaited move to Manchester United for £73m after a stellar rise at Borussia Dortmund, where he notched 17 goals and 16 assists in a single Bundesliga campaign.
Now, just four years later, the winger finds himself in an unprecedented position: Chelsea have paid £5m to avoid signing him permanently.
Promising Beginnings Turn to Disappointment

Sancho’s arrival was hailed as a new era for United’s frontline. The former Manchester City academy star had all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League.
However, an underwhelming debut campaign saw him finish with just five goals and three assists, as the club endured managerial turmoil under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
Despite glimpses of promise under Erik ten Hag, a persistent issue from his Dortmund days resurfaced: poor timekeeping. While it was tolerated in Germany due to his performances, it quickly became a problem at United.
Breakdown with Ten Hag and United Exile
By 2023, Sancho’s situation had deteriorated. After being dropped for a clash with Arsenal, Ten Hag publicly cited poor training performances. Sancho responded defiantly on social media, denying the claims and accusing the club of using him as a scapegoat.
The fallout led to a long-term exclusion from the first team after he refused to apologise—a stance that saw support from some team-mates but ultimately left him in limbo.
Dortmund Loan Revives Career—Briefly

A January 2024 loan return to Dortmund offered temporary redemption. “It felt like coming home,” said Sancho, who contributed three goals and three assists in 21 appearances, helping Dortmund reach the Champions League final.
Though he never quite recaptured his old form, his performances hinted at recovery.
Chelsea’s Exit Clause Sparks Debate
Sancho joined Chelsea in August 2024 on loan, with an obligation-to-buy clause set at £25m—triggered if the club finished higher than 14th in the Premier League.
Despite ending the season with five goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances, and scoring in the UEFA Conference League final, Chelsea have opted to pay £5m to void the clause, reportedly due to his £300,000-a-week wage demands.
He is now set to return to Manchester United once more, with his future again uncertain.
What’s Next for Sancho?
With his value diminished and a reputation tainted by off-field issues, the 25-year-old is far removed from the generational talent once courted by Europe’s elite.
United must now decide whether to reintegrate him or seek another loan or sale—but his options are likely fewer and far less lucrative than they were in 2020.
