Scheffler to Miss PGA Season Start After Christmas Injury

Scottie Scheffler was the first player to win seven times on the PGA Tour in a season since Tiger Woods in 2007

World number one Scottie Scheffler will sit out the opening weeks of the 2025 PGA Tour season following surgery for a hand injury sustained while cooking Christmas dinner.

The 28-year-old American has withdrawn from next week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions and the following Sony Open, both in Hawaii. Scheffler aims to return at The American Express Championship in California, scheduled for 16-19 January.

Details of the Injury and Recovery Timeline

In a statement on Friday, Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, provided details of the incident:

“On Christmas Day, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from broken glass while preparing dinner. Small glass fragments remained in the palm, requiring surgery.”

The statement assured fans of Scheffler’s recovery:

“He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.”

A Stellar 2024 Season for Scheffler

Scheffler’s absence comes after a phenomenal 2024 season, where he was named the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year for the third consecutive time. Highlights included:

  • Winning nine titles, including repeat victories at both The Players Championship and The Masters.
  • Securing an Olympic gold medal in Paris.
  • Claiming his first FedEx Cup title with a victory at the Tour Championship.

However, the season wasn’t without its drama. Ahead of the second round of the US PGA Championship, Scheffler warmed up for his tee time in a jail cell after an unexpected arrest. All charges were later dropped.

Looking Ahead

Scheffler’s return at The American Express will mark the start of his campaign to build on an extraordinary 2024 season. Fans will be eager to see the world’s top-ranked golfer resume his dominance on the course.
