Steph Houghton Joins WSL Hall of Fame as One of Four New Inductees

Former England and Manchester City captain Steph Houghton has been named one of the four new inductees to the Women’s Super League (WSL) Hall of Fame. The 36-year-old defender, who retired from professional football at the end of the 2023/24 season, continues to cement her legacy both on and off the pitch.

Houghton’s journey in the WSL began in 2011 when she was at Arsenal, a few years into her career, and she quickly made her mark by helping the team secure back-to-back league titles in the inaugural seasons of the new league. She also contributed to Arsenal’s success with two Women’s FA Cups and three Women’s League Cups.

In 2014, Houghton made a high-profile move to Manchester City, where she would go on to become a club legend. As City’s captain, she led her side to three Women’s FA Cups, three Women’s League Cups, and the WSL title in 2016. With a remarkable seven major trophies under her belt, Houghton remains Manchester City’s most decorated player. Over her career, she made 178 appearances in the WSL, scoring 23 goals, while also earning a reputation as a leader on the field.

On the international stage, Houghton captained the England national team for eight years, guiding the Lionesses through a number of major tournaments, including the Women’s World Cup and European Championships. Her leadership was integral to England’s success and growing prominence in women’s football.

Although Houghton retired from professional football, her influence continues. She has transitioned into broadcasting, regularly appearing as a pundit across BBC and Sky Sports, providing expert commentary on both the women’s and men’s game.

Houghton’s induction into the WSL Hall of Fame is a fitting recognition of her stellar career, joining fellow inductees including former England teammate Alex Scott, ex-defender Gill Flaherty, and referee Rebecca Welch. The official induction event will take place in January 2025, marking yet another milestone in Houghton’s lasting legacy in women’s football.
