The 45th Season of Women’s Basketball Begins
The 45th season of the ING Women’s Basketball Super League will start tomorrow with matches.
In the Super League, Fenerbahce has been the most successful team, achieving championship 18 times.
Following Fenerbahce, Galatasaray has won the championship 13 times.
The yellow-red team, which once dominated women’s basketball championships, set a record by winning the league cup 9 times in a row between the 1989-1990 and 1997-1998 seasons.
Galatasaray also brought home the championship trophy in the 1987-1988, 1999-2000, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015 seasons.
- Fenerbahce Dominated Recent Years
Fenerbahce surpassed Galatasaray in recent years with its championships in the Women’s Basketball Super League.
The yellow-navy team first celebrated a championship in the 1998-1999 season. They also lifted the trophy in the 2001-2002 and 2003-2004 seasons, followed by 8 consecutive championships from the 2005-2006 to the 2012-2013 seasons.
In the 2015-2016 playoff final, Fenerbahce defeated Hatay Buyuksehir Belediyespor 3-0 to win their 12th championship.
- Fenerbahce is the Champion of the Last 6 Completed Seasons
Fenerbahce finished the last 6 seasons with a championship title.
The yellow-navy team celebrated consecutive championships in the 2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 seasons, increasing their total number of trophies to 18.
- The 2019-2020 Season Was Not Completed
The 2019-2020 season of the Women’s Basketball Super League was not completed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The league was suspended on March 14 after the 21st week of matches, and the Turkey Basketball Federation’s Board of Directors decided on May 11 to end the season without declaring a champion or relegating any teams.
- Besiktas and ODTU Each Have Three Championships
In the history of the league, both Besiktas and ODTU have celebrated the championship three times each.
Additionally, MTA and BOTAS have each won the championship twice, while Istanbul University and Near East University have each won it once.
- 5 Turkish Teams Competing in European Cups
This season, 5 women’s basketball teams will represent Turkey in European cups.
Fenerbahce will participate in the FIBA Women’s EuroLeague as the reigning champion for the last two years. CBK Mersin will also compete in the EuroLeague group stage.
Besiktas, eliminated in the EuroLeague preliminary round, will represent Turkey in the FIBA Europe Cup. Galatasaray Cagdas Faktoring and YTR Gayrimenkul Bodrum Basketball will also compete in the FIBA Europe Cup on behalf of Turkey.
