Spurs Could Be Without Any Fit Centre-Backs Against Wolves

006 9

Tottenham Hotspur faces a severe defensive crisis ahead of their Premier League clash with Wolves on Sunday, as manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Ben Davies has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The 31-year-old Wales international had been close to returning but will now remain sidelined:

“Unfortunately, Ben had a setback in training, so he’ll probably be out for a couple of weeks,” Postecoglou said on Friday.

Injury Woes Deepen for Spurs

Radu Drăgușin, who was forced off with an ankle injury during Thursday’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, is also doubtful. If ruled out, Drăgușin will join Davies, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero on the sidelines, leaving Spurs without a single fit senior centre-back.

Postecoglou said it’s too soon to determine Drăgușin’s availability:

“He tweaked his ankle last night and couldn’t continue. We’ll have to wait and see.”

During the Forest defeat, Spurs ended the match with 18-year-old Archie Gray and midfielder Yves Bissouma filling in at centre-back. Adding to their problems, Djed Spence is suspended for Sunday’s 15:00 GMT kick-off, further depleting the squad.

Postecoglou: Worst Injury Crisis of My Career

Postecoglou, who has managed several teams during his career, admitted this is the most challenging injury crisis he has faced:

“There’s always been issues at different times, but not to this extent. We’ve had close to 10 first-team players unavailable for significant periods.”

Despite the challenges, the Australian remains optimistic:

“Whatever we need to deal with, we’ll deal with it and get ready for Sunday.”

A Challenging Season for Tottenham

The defeat at Nottingham Forest marked Spurs’ ninth loss of the season, leaving them 11th in the Premier League standings. However, Spurs still have hopes for silverware, with a Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool on the horizon next month.

Postecoglou remains confident in his attacking philosophy and feels the support of the fans, despite recent criticism:

“They love their football club, and they want it to succeed. I haven’t felt anything but support since I’ve been here.”

Looking Ahead

Tottenham’s test against Wolves will require creative solutions to the defensive crisis, and all eyes will be on how Postecoglou navigates this challenging period.
