ALBON: “BORTOLETO MAY JOIN SAUBER, BUT COLAPINTO CAN IMPACT IT.”
According to Alex Albon, there will be a tight competition for who will join the Sauber team in the 2025 season.
Currently, there are two vacant seats for the F1 2025 grid. One is at VCARB, and the other is at Sauber, which is entering its last season before transitioning to Audi works.
The speculation that Valtteri Bottas has rejected claims about extending his contract with Sauber strengthens the rumors that F2 Championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto is on Audi F1 chief Mattia Binotto’s list.
However, Williams driver Albon states that Colapinto, who is replacing Logan Sargeant, is also part of this competition.
In response to a question from the Brazilian edition about whether Bortoleto will be on the F1 2025 grid, Albon said: “I don’t know, but there will be a tough fight for it.”
“I believe Franco will be part of this competition as well.”
“I saw it happening, but I’m not really involved in the process. You all know the discussions in the paddock better.” Sargeant managed to bring only 1 point to the team in his 36 races with Williams. However, Colapinto has already reached 4 points by finishing eighth in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Albon stated, “Colapinto is a very fast and comfortable driver. Most drivers who have just moved up to F1 tend to be quite nervous, but he doesn’t seem to feel that way.” He added, “Since he arrived, he has shown his speed on very challenging tracks.” Williams confirmed that they are in talks with Sauber to make a deal that would bring Colapinto into the Audi F1 era.
