David Beckham made important statements about Lionel Messi’s transfer to Inter Miami. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner moved to Florida in the summer of 2023, becoming a landmark signing for both Inter Miami and MLS. After leaving Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent, Messi decided to chase the American dream.
Messi has had a significant impact in the U.S., attracting even more attention to the rapidly growing sport and continuing to chase major trophies in 2024. Inter Miami is still aiming for the Supporters’ Shield and the MLS Cup.
At the Stella Artois ‘Evening’ event in New York, Inter Miami co-owner Beckham explained why Messi chose to come to the U.S.: “The only thing he cared about was finding a place where his family could enjoy life and have a great time. That was really important to Leo. From the very first moment he stepped foot in Miami, honestly, it felt like a dream. He came here to fulfill that.”
Manchester United and England legend Beckham also shared his thoughts on signing the greatest player of all time: “Being able to say we signed the best player in the history of football. Everyone has their own opinion about who the greatest player of all time is. Players like Diego Maradona, Pele, were obviously incredible too.
But to say we have the greatest player to ever play the game here in MLS, in Miami, it feels like a dream. Every time I go there, it’s like I’m in a dream. If I go for the entire summer — and I went for four weeks this summer — every day, I’m going to training because I still can’t believe we have Leo. And second, I just want to watch what he does. It’s something special for us.”
Messi helped Inter Miami achieve a historic Leagues Cup victory just weeks after joining. Though he missed several matches this season due to injury, Messi has regained form at a critical stage of the campaign.
