Club Issues Statement Following Social Media Post
FAI Cup winners Drogheda United have publicly distanced themselves from Conor McGregor after the MMA fighter shared photos of the FAI Cup trophy on social media. The images, posted on Instagram, featured McGregor celebrating with his cousin, Warren Davis, an unused substitute in the November final.
McGregor’s Social Media Post Sparks Controversy
McGregor, 36, captioned the post:
“How much is it to buy a League of Ireland team? I might buy two.”
Drogheda United responded with a statement:
“Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first-team players, who, like all players, had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals. Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned.”
FAI Cup Triumph Overshadowed
Drogheda United stunned Derry City with a 2-0 victory in Dublin to claim the FAI Cup for the second time in their history. However, McGregor’s post has drawn attention away from the club’s achievement, leading to the public clarification.
McGregor’s Legal Issues
The controversy comes amid ongoing legal challenges for McGregor. In November, an Irish jury found him liable for assault in a civil rape case, ordering him to pay €248,000 (£206,000) in damages. McGregor, who denies the allegations, has stated his intention to appeal the verdict.
