Maresca Denies Regrets After Leaving Chilwell Out of Chelsea’s European Trip
Even with the full-back’s outstanding comeback in the Carabao Cup, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca adamantly denied any regret over his choice to leave Ben Chilwell out of the Conference League team.
Maresca advised the England international to look for a move away from Stamford Bridge after telling him he wasn’t part of Chelsea’s future intentions during the summer transfer window. But Chilwell stayed at Chelsea and no deal happened; last week he made his first Carabao Cup appearance of the season.
Maresca did consider his choice to freeze out the left-back early in the season, stating: “probably yes; probably no. I am here to render decisions. They are not always bad decisions; occasionally they are wise ones. On leaving Chilwell out of the Conference League team, though, the Chelsea manager answered bluntly.
WHICH MARESCA SAID
Maresca answered unequivocally when asked whether he regretted leaving Chilwell out of the team for the Conference League: “No. Neither do I. No.”
As the squad negotiates a hectic season with European obligations and local competitions, the Chelsea coach is steadfast in his judgment. Maresca supports Chilwell’s decisions despite the U-turn on his squad position since he emphasizes the significance of making difficult decisions when developing the team.
