FIM Prepares to Freeze MotoGP Power Units

The FIM Grand Prix Commission is preparing to approve a freeze on engine development in MotoGP until new regulations come into effect in 2027.

According to Autosport, the GPC is expected to announce this change at a meeting scheduled before the next race of the season in Misano.

However, the two Japanese manufacturers, Honda and Yamaha, who are currently benefiting from concession rules, will be exempt from the freeze as long as they do not achieve stronger results.

The power unit freeze strategy was previously implemented in MotoGP following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, when power units were frozen from the start of 2020 until the end of 2021.

After 2027, the current 1000cc engines will be replaced by smaller 850cc versions, accompanied by significant restrictions on devices like aerodynamic elements and ride height adjusters.

The freeze on power units will take effect no later than March 2nd next year, ahead of the season opener at the Thailand Grand Prix.
